About Frontier Passages
Frontier Passages is a sailing adventure company that provides offshore sailing passages for people wanting adventure, challenge, and an escape from the monotony of modern life.
We offer offshore sailing passages, typically a week long, aboard the Hylas 54 Seraph, along with carefully curated retreat curricula to complement the offshore adventure.
Our packages typically include a significant sailing passage (generally around 500 nautical miles or more) consisting of constant sailing during which all crew are involved in the operation of the sailboat, standing watch (day and night), meal preparation, and other related responsibilities.
No, you don’t need to know how to sail before you join a passage – just a willingness to learn and share the responsibilities of sailing the vessel!
Passages are bookended by an orientation and debriefing – typically a day on each end of the passage. Daily schedules are broken up by watches and punctuated by brief touchpoints around the retreat curriculum, characterizing the specific passage.
We offer both standardized and bespoke itineraries:
Standardized curricula follow set content established by our curriculum team along various themes laid out across the duration of a passage.
Bespoke itineraries can be tailored to meet specific group needs, including extended periods in the tropics around destination points. The specific content of bespoke itineraries can be co-developed with our curriculum team to ensure close alignment with specific group needs.
The Vessel
The vessel at the heart of the experience is the Seraph, a 1999 Hylas 54. Designed by German Frers and built by Queen Long, the Hylas is highly regarded as a blue-water cruising vessel.
She spent the first half of her life in the Pacific waters of California, after which she was sailed through the Panama Canal into the Caribbean and then the Atlantic, bringing her to her new home in Charleston, South Carolina.
In 2025 she underwent a change of ownership, beginning her new identity as the Seraph, serving a purpose beyond just private ownership.
She is based in Charleston, South Carolina, and collaborates closely with her sister company, Frontier Passages, bringing exciting adventure and offshore sailing to the intrepid and curious.
